Get a Dietitian Degree Online
If you have the previous educational experience required and you want to earn a dietitian degree online, there are several top schools that can let you do study at home via online classes for much of your curriculum.
Be advised that at some point, you will need to go do field study or other supervised educational requirements as part of your education. You’ll have a much better chance of landing a permanent dietitian’s position after graduation if you specialize in something like diabetics, or have gotten your master’s degree as a dietitian.
What is a dietitian?
If you like people and are interested in food and nutrition, being a dietitian might just be for you. As a dietitian, you help people with their physical health through proper nutrition. You also help clients by giving them personal advice on healthy diets, and you pull from knowledge in many different branches of medicine and science when you do so, including physiology, psychology, nutrition and biochemistry.
If you want to become what’s called a “registered dietitian”, you must first have a bachelor’s degree in related field like food management, human nutrition, or dietetics.
You must also have completed a yearlong supervised practice program at an accredited facility, food service corporation, community agency, or related organization. You must then pass the national registration examination for dietitians, which is given by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Other requirements
In addition to degree, educational, and certification requirements described above, most states (48 in all at present) have their own requirements. Most states also require that once you have earned the requisite certifications comment section, you have to continue with your education throughout your career by earning continuing education credits to stay certified. Much of this can also be done online.
Finding an accredited online college for your education
Before you sign up for one, do research on each college you are considering to make sure they truly are accredited and top notch in their field. Simply using Google and typing in each educational institution’s name and the words “accredited” or “complaint” should tell you whether or not they truly are above board and offer the degrees they say they do.
It’s also helpful to contact institutions that use dietitians, like nursing homes and hospitals, to find out what they look for in their dietitians, good local schools, and so on. They can also give you very helpful information as to what it takes to become a dietitian.
Finally, contact your local college or university. Many of these institutions now offer online degrees either partially or wholly done from home. This can be helpful, since at least part of your course of study is going to have to be done as a field study whereby you’re supervised directly in your work. Choosing a college that’s close to home (or one that you are willing to relocate to) will make it much easier for you to do this type of field study once the time comes.
